HAUSER & WIRTH

Hauser & Wirth Menorca is an art centre combining art, education and conservation in the natural setting of Illa del Rei, an island in Mahon harbour. The art centre presents an exhibition programme spanning ambitious new commissions by gallery artists across all media. In Menorca, the exhibitions are accompanied by a cultural and learning programme, developed in collaboration with local entities.

The exhibition space comprises eight galleries and an outdoor sculpture trail, which has featured works by artists such as Eduardo Chillida, Louise Bourgeois, Joan Miró and Thomas J Price. A garden by the acclaimed landscape designer Piet Oudolf runs alongside the gallery buildings, incorporating native perennials and plants suited to the Mediterranean climate.

Hospital Foundation

The main landmark of the island is a decommissioned hospital founded by the English navy in 1711. The historical building forms a u-shape, facing southeast and surrounding a square and a chapel. The Foundation Hospital de l’Illa del Rei was established in 2004 by Luis Alejandre. The Foundation has worked for the last over 20 years to protect and conserve the historical site.

Besides the restoration of the island and its buildings, and the promotion of its history with an ongoing programme of activities, the Foundation has created a museum that celebrates the 300 years of history of the hospital, with rooms dedicated to the different medical disciplines.
